Hibiscus flowers are the main ingredient in many teas made around the world, especially in Mexico, Latin America, and North Africa. 

 

Hibiscus has a tart and floral taste. It makes a beautifuldark red, caffeine-free herbal tea, and can be added to many recipes including baked goods, skin care, food coloring, and simmer pots. 

 

Hibiscus is rich in flavonoids, which are plant metabolites with antioxidant effects. Hibiscus has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Many people find hibiscus helpful for alleviating autoimmune disorders, promoting liver and kidney health, preventing menstrual cramps, alleviating depression, aiding digestion and preventing constipation.

 

For tea, pour 1 c boiling water over 1 tsp hibiscus, cover, and steep 5-7 mins. Drink and enjoy! 

     

    Precautions
    Hibiscus flowers are often intercropped with peanuts. Occasionally fragments of peanut shells are present. Caution for individuals with severe peanut allergies.
